The Government of Sierra Leone has issued a robust public statement refuting claims by the Gento Group, which alleged it secured land rights to mine the Tonkolili North Kasafoni Iron Ore Deposit, in a firm rebuttal, the government asserts that the Kasafoni deposit is solely owned and managed by the Sierra Leone mines and minerals Development and Management Corporation (SLMMDMC), a state entity safeguarding national mineral wealth for all Sierra Leoneans.

The law is unequivocal, the statement declares, this deposit is allocated to the SLMMDMC by cabinet and parliament. No private entity, individual, or traditional leader can lease, sell, or assign rights over it, this stance counters Gento Group’s assertions, backed by media reports, claiming local agreements to mine at Sula Mountain, Tonkolili District claims deemed legally void by authorities.

Officials warn that unauthorized attempts to claim or operate in the area may face legal consequences, this asset is the Republic’s property, protected by law, the statement cautions, advising the public against private deals, the government urges investors, traditional authorities, and communities to liaise solely with the SLMMDMC, preventing illegal arrangements that threaten national resources.

As Sierra Leone stands firm at this hour, this move, underscores a commitment to resource sovereignty.
