Sacked letter written to one of the workers
Global Lite Refinery, a newly established oil refining and marketing company along the Bo Taiama Highway in southern Sierra Leone, is facing serious allegations of labour rights violations after dismissing dozens of workers earlier this year.
The company, which has been under construction for nearly two years and is now nearing full operational capacity, reportedly laid off several workers in February, stating that their services were no longer needed, however, the dismissed workers claim they have not received their full benefits or payments in lieu of service as required by Sierra Leone’s labour laws.
Some former employees also allege that the construction site lacked adequate safety measures throughout the building phase, putting workers at risk.
When contacted for comment, the site manager, Mrs. Muminatu Sesay, initially acknowledged the request for an interview and promised to schedule a formal discussion. She later informed this medium that she needed to “consult her lawyers” before responding. Despite multiple follow-up attempts, she has not answered further calls.
Frustrated by the delays and lack of clarity, the workers had begun mobilizing for a protest. They were later issued part-payment, but many say the gesture is insufficient and warn that further action may follow if their outstanding benefits are not settled.
The matter highlights growing concerns about the enforcement of labour laws and workers’ rights in emerging industrial operations across Sierra Leone.
