In a landmark step toward implementing the Transform Freetown transforming lives agenda, Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr on 25 November 2025, officially handed over the Kingtom Dumpsite to Sierra Forever green Ltd, a leading recycling company set to manage the site and operate a state-of-the-art plastics recycling facility.
The new facility is projected to process up to 30 tons of plastic daily and is expected to create approximately 500 new jobs. Informal waste pickers currently working at Kingtom will be integrated into a formal system, providing them with better protections, stable incomes, and improved working conditions.
Mayor Aki-Sawyerr expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting the growing demand for recycled plastics and the facility’s potential to significantly reduce plastic waste in Freetown, keeping our city clean is a shared responsibility, she said. I urge all Freetonians to comply with the new sanitation bylaws and register with FCC-approved waste service providers so that waste is properly managed and does not end up in our streets, gutters, or waterways.
The project represents a key milestone in Freetown’s broader environmental and economic development strategy, combining sustainable waste management with job creation and community empowerment.
