In reflecting upon the trajectory of our beloved Sierra Leone, one cannot help but ponder if we are truly on the path that our forefathers envisioned for us. While some may argue that the times of yesteryears were marred with challenges, I maintain the belief that there was a semblance of order and promise that seems elusive today. A poignant thought arises: had every past and present government steadfastly directed its attention to a select few developmental aspects, would we find ourselves in the quagmire we currently navigate?

Each successive government, in its tenure, brings forth its manifesto and projects, aiming to carve a unique legacy. Undoubtedly, this individualistic approach is commendable, but it’s time we adopt a more holistic perspective for national advancement. A unified, long-term developmental plan that transcends political tenures is the need of the hour.

The Bintumani Talks serve as a stark reminder of such aspirations. However, one can’t help but question if the underlying intent truly aligned with the nation’s best interests. Perhaps it’s time for a consortium of eminent Sierra Leoneans to collaboratively draft a comprehensive developmental blueprint spanning decades, a blueprint that seeks validation from our citizens through democratic processes.

Core Developmental Priorities:

Electricity (Light): Access to consistent and affordable electricity remains a cornerstone for industrial growth and societal advancement. An electrified nation catalyzes economic activities, enhances healthcare services, and fosters educational endeavors.

Healthcare:

The health of a nation is the wealth of a nation. Prioritizing accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services ensures a productive population and mitigates preventable deaths.

Employment:

Addressing the burgeoning issue of unemployment demands innovative strategies. Promoting entrepreneurship, enhancing vocational training, and fostering a conducive business environment can usher in an era of prosperity.

Infrastructure & Roads:

Robust infrastructure, coupled with well-maintained roads, facilitates seamless connectivity, enhances trade, and fosters regional integration.

Education:

Investing in education equips our youth with the requisite skills, knowledge, and competencies to navigate an increasingly complex global landscape.

Comparative Insights:

Drawing parallels with certain African nations underscores the significance of prioritizing core developmental goals. Countries that have channeled resources and efforts into these pivotal sectors have witnessed tangible socio-economic transformations, serving as beacons of inspiration.

In contemplating Sierra Leone’s developmental trajectory, there is wisdom to be gleaned from the remarkable transformation witnessed in Rwanda. The narrative of Rwanda’s resurgence from the ashes of a devastating past offers a poignant example of what can be achieved through strategic prioritization of core developmental goals.

Why is such developmental goal necessary?

The idea of establishing a developmental goal that spans across changes in government is rooted in the concept of sustainable and consistent national progress. Here are several reasons why such a developmental goal is important for any nation, regardless of changes in government:

Long-Term Vision and Stability:

A consistent developmental goal provides a long-term vision for the nation, ensuring stability in policy implementation. This stability is crucial for attracting investments, fostering economic growth, and building confidence among citizens and stakeholders.

Non-Partisan National Development:

A shared developmental goal that transcends political affiliations emphasizes the importance of national development over party politics. It encourages a collaborative approach where successive governments build upon the achievements of their predecessors, fostering continuity in developmental initiatives.

Citizen-Centric Approach:

By allowing citizens to vote on a scale of preference for developmental goals, governments can align their priorities with the actual needs and preferences of the population. This citizen-centric approach promotes transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to the evolving needs of society.

Efficient Resource Allocation:

Concentrating on a limited number of goals at a time allows governments to allocate resources more efficiently. This focused approach ensures that critical issues are addressed comprehensively, leading to tangible and measurable outcomes.

Avoiding Reversals in Progress:

Handling three selected goals in a term provides a baseline for progress. Subsequent governments can then build upon these achievements rather than starting anew. This minimizes the risk of reversing positive developments and ensures a continuous trajectory of improvement.

Demonstrating Commitment:

Governments that commit to specific developmental goals and deliver on them demonstrate a commitment to the well-being of their citizens. This commitment builds trust between the government and the public, fostering a positive relationship and a sense of shared responsibility.

Catalyzing Comprehensive Development:

Prioritizing three specific goals at a time allows for a more in-depth and comprehensive approach to development. This can include a focus on interconnected issues, such as education, healthcare, and employment, creating a synergistic effect on overall societal advancement.

Adaptability to Changing Circumstances:

A dynamic approach to developmental goals allows for adaptability to changing circumstances and emerging challenges. It enables governments to respond effectively to new priorities while maintaining a commitment to ongoing initiatives.

By adopting this approach, a nation can create a roadmap for sustainable development that transcends political cycles. It promotes continuity, citizen participation, and efficient governance, ultimately contributing to the long-term prosperity and well-being of the country.

A Plea to All Stakeholders:

To our esteemed political parties, governments, and citizens, I beseech you to transcend partisan politics and prioritize our nation’s holistic development. Let us rally behind a shared vision, relegating transient political gains for the collective good.

Sierra Leone stands at a crossroads, teeming with potential yet grappling with multifaceted challenges. Embracing a unified, long-term developmental agenda is not merely desirable; it’s imperative. Together, let us forge a path that honors our past, navigates the present, and heralds a promising future for generations to come.
