Five accused persons Mohamed Kallon alias AIG, 29, unemployed; Abdulai Dauda, 27, a miner residing at No. 18 Koroma Street, Kenema City; Momoh James alias Leather Boot, 33, police officer, Tongo Field; Saidu Sunny Lahai, 42, police officer, No. 19 Cemetery Road, Bo City—have been sentenced to imprisonment by Justice Abdul Sheriff of the High Court in Kenema for robbery with aggravation.

The five were standing trial on five counts, ranging from conspiracy to robbery with aggravation, contrary to Section 23 (1)(a) of the Larceny Act 1916, as repealed and replaced by Section 1 of the schedule of the Abolition of the Death Penalty Act 2022.

According to court records, on August 4, 2024, in Kenema City, the accused allegedly conspired with unknown individuals to commit robbery with aggravation. On that date, in the company of others, they reportedly robbed Titty Simbo Kamara of an iPad Pro Max valued at NLe 15,000, a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone valued at NLe 7,000, NLe 580 in cash, and other items totaling NLe 22,645.

The accused also allegedly robbed James Martin Turay of a Samsung Note 3 mobile phone valued at NLe 2,000 and NLe 10,951 in cash, as well as Musu Kamara of NLe 800.

During the summation to the jury, Justice Abdul Sheriff noted the evidence presented, after which the jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts.

In mitigation, Defence Counsel Samuel S. Pessima of the Legal Aid Board in Kenema pleaded for mercy, stating that the convicts were remorseful and committed to reform.

Considering the jury’s guilty verdict and the plea in mitigation, Justice Abdul Sheriff weighed the aggravating factors of the offences. The court sentenced each convict as follows, Count One: 2 years’ imprisonment each Counts Two, Three, Four, and Five: 15 years’ imprisonment each, to run consecutively

Additionally, pursuant to Section 59 of the Criminal Procedure Act (CPA) 1965, Justice Sheriff ordered that the silver HP laptop, two assorted mobile phones, and other material exhibits be returned to the rightful owner, Titty Simbo Kamara.

The case was prosecuted by Andrew F. Kamara, State Counsel and Customary Law Officer in Kenema District.
