In a show of support to the flagship programme of His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio in areas of education and human capital development in Sierra Leone, the Director General of the Financial Intelligence Agency (FIA), Mr. David N. Borbor, on behalf of the Agency, has presented a gift to the Best Graduating Student of B.Sc. Economics at the Eastern Technical University (ETU) in Kenema City.

The presentation was made during ETU’s graduation ceremony held on Saturday, 17th January 2026, at the University’s campus in Kenema City, witnessed by university authorities, graduating students, parents, and invited guests.

Speaking to this writer, Mr. Borbor underscored the importance of investing in education as a critical driver of national development. He noted that the gesture forms part of the Financial Intelligence Agency’s broader outreach efforts to encourage academic excellence, particularly in disciplines such as economics that are vital to sound financial management, policy formulation, and economic growth. *“Education remains one of the key priorities of the government of HE President Bio. It is also a tool for sustainable development,” Mr. Borbor said. “By recognizing and rewarding excellence, we hope to motivate young people to pursue knowledge, integrity, and professionalism in their future careers for the benefit of Sierra Leone.”

The recipient of the award, Sulaiman Kamara with a grade point of 4.41, who emerged as the best graduating student in the B.Sc. Economics programme, expressed profound gratitude to the Financial Intelligence Agency and its Director General for the recognition, describing it as a morale booster and an inspiration to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Augustine Amara Kanneh Esq. who serves as the Public Relations Officer of the University commended the Director General of the Agency for the timely support, noting that such gestures can uplift academic establishments and play a crucial role in promoting academic achievement, thus, preparing graduates for the demands of the modern workforce. He further noted that the accolade reflects the university’s commitment to excellence, research, and collaboration with national institutions to advance literacy and policy-minded graduates.

President Bio’s administration has consistently positioned education reform and human capital development as central to national progress. The government’s flagship initiatives emphasize universal access to quality schooling and education, and targeted skills training to prepare Sierra Leoneans for higher-value employment in a rapidly changing economy.

ETU’s leadership welcomed the award as a milestone for the university and its students. It is expected that this recognition will inspire other students from the University to pursue higher education with vigor, particularly in economics, finance, and related fields that underpin sound governance and sustainable development.

The Financial Intelligence Agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote education and capacity building, in line with its mandate to safeguard the financial integrity of the country and contribute to Sierra Leone’s long-term development goals.
