Sierra Leone’s First Lady and President of the Organization of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), Fatima Maada Bio, has arrived in Addis Ababa to participate in the 30th General Assembly of OAFLAD, a major continental forum focused on advancing the welfare of women, children, and vulnerable communities across Africa.
Speaking upon her arrival, Dr. Bio described the assembly as a vital platform for strengthening collective African leadership through dialogue, shared experience, and coordinated action. She noted that First Ladies from across the continent are convening to deepen collaboration on priority issues including health, education, gender equality, reproductive health, and youth empowerment.
Dr. Bio said her participation reflects a renewed determination to promote sustainable development and amplify Africa’s voice on the global stage. As OAFLAD President, she emphasized her commitment to ensuring that the organization delivers measurable and people-centered impact, particularly in areas affecting girls and young women.
Beyond her continental role, Dr. Bio continues to be widely recognized in Sierra Leone for her advocacy on women’s and girls’ rights, most notably through the Hands Off Our Girls Campaign, which focuses on ending sexual violence, child marriage, and barriers to girls’ education. Her work has contributed to shaping both national and regional conversations on gender justice and social protection.
Observers within civil society and the Sierra Leone People’s Party note that Dr. Bio has expanded the traditional role of a First Lady through active engagement in policy advocacy, party mobilization, and international representation. Supporters highlight her growing influence among women, youth, civil society groups, and security institutions, viewing her as a resilient and impactful leader.
As of early 2026, Dr. Bio remains focused on consolidating her advocacy work through OAFLAD and supporting long-term development and political objectives aligned with Sierra Leone’s future, including the governing party’s outlook toward 2028.
