Aside the fact that those compatriots do not have lifejackets at the middle of the sea, you are tempted to ask to the Maritime Adminsitartion is doing in all of this. To publicly see some societal wrong and to accept same is some unhindered misnomer, you know?

In recent months, concerns have been growing among residents and travelers in Lungi regarding the safety of boat transportation across the waterways. The situation has become increasingly alarming, with frequent reports of overcrowded vessels, inadequate safety measures, and poorly maintained boats risking the lives of passengers daily.

Local commuters, especially those who rely on boats for travel between Lungi and Freetown, have expressed fears about the current state of water transport. Many boats lack life jackets, and safety briefings are rarely conducted before departure. Moreover, the age and condition of some vessels raise serious concerns, with reports of mechanical failures and even accidents becoming more common.

One frequent traveller, Ibrahim Kamara, shared his worries, stating, “Each time I board a boat, I fear for my life. There are too many people, and the boats are not in good condition. We are putting our lives at risk because we have no other choice.”

In response to these growing concerns, local authorities have promised to step up inspections and enforce stricter safety regulations. However, residents argue that more immediate actions are needed to prevent potential tragedies. They call for regular maintenance of boats, mandatory safety gear for all passengers, and proper training for boat operators.

As the rainy season continues, the need for safe and reliable boat transportation is more urgent than ever. Residents and stakeholders alike hope that the authorities will take swift action to ensure the safety of all who depend on this vital mode of transport in Lungi.
