The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has successfully wrapped up the third and final day of its Collaborating, Learning and Adapting Conference 2026 (CLA26), placing strong emphasis on chemical waste management, environmental health, and safety.

The three-day conference brought together stakeholders from across sectors to address pressing environmental challenges, with particular focus on advancing the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). A key milestone of the event was the launch of the country’s first National Pollutant Inventory (NPI), marking a significant step toward tracking and managing pollution as part of a coordinated global response.

Participants also reviewed findings from a formative workshop led by the Centre for Environmental Data and Statistics (CEDAS), which aims to establish a centralized hub for environmental data. Discussions highlighted major policy initiatives, including the development of a national plastic waste policy and the introduction of lead regulations designed to safeguard public health and regulate chemical use.

One of the standout moments of the conference was a dramatized performance by WAM Collegiate Secondary School titled “The Role of Lead Paint Regulation.” The skit underscored the dangers of lead exposure, particularly its harmful effects as a neurotoxin in children, drawing attention to the urgency of stronger regulatory frameworks.

Plenary sessions throughout the day tackled a range of critical issues, including illegal river dredge mining and stakeholder complicity, as well as the environmental impact of mercury pollution on marine ecosystems. Discussions also explored challenges within the artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector, highlighting the need for sustainable practices.

In addition, participants examined progress in implementing the Montreal Protocol, focusing on the phase-out of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) and ongoing surveys on hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). These conversations reinforced the country’s commitment to global environmental agreements and climate action.

The conference underscored the importance of collaboration, resource mobilization, and knowledge sharing as essential tools for strengthening environmental governance and achieving long-term sustainability goals.

In his closing remarks, EPA Executive Chairman Dr. Abu-Bakar S. Massaquoi emphasized the need for effective collaboration, prioritization, and timely decision-making in addressing institutional challenges. He called for the integration of diverse stakeholder interests to ensure impactful environmental management.

Dr. Massaquoi also expressed appreciation to sponsors, partners, staff, panelists, and supporters whose contributions ensured the success of CLA26.

Looking ahead, organizers announced that CLA27 is expected to be larger, more action-oriented, and focused on delivering measurable environmental outcomes.
