ECOWAS Volunteers Programme to celebrate

The ECOWAS Volunteers Programme in Sierra Leone has announced a series of activities to commemorate ECOWAS Day on May 28, 2024. In a recent appearance on AYV TV, Preaches Garga Gbessagee, Country Coordinator of the ECOWAS Volunteers Programme in Sierra Leone, and Mohamed Jalloh, Administrative Officer of the program, outlined their plans to visit orphanage homes across the country to provide much-needed relief materials.

**”The primary objectives of the visitation are to assess needs, build relationships with the kids, and offer emotional support,” said Gbessagee. “Furthermore, the provision of food and water will attend to their immediate nutritional requirements and enhance their overall health. Additionally, it demonstrates compassion and support for marginalized groups, which may encourage others to make contributions to their well-being.”**

Gbessagee noted that at least ten orphanages and six impoverished communities across the nation are anticipated to benefit from these visits. This initiative not only aims to address immediate needs but also to inspire broader community support for these vulnerable groups.

Providing an update on the relief materials to be distributed, Mohamed Jalloh stated, **”The items we will be providing include bags of rice, assorted snacks and cereals, beverages, and sanitary pads. The orphanages we will be visiting are located in Freetown, Pujehun, Makeni, Kenema, Kono, and Kabala.”**

Jalloh further explained that the program will be carried out over seven days, from May 28 to June 3, 2024. **”This extended period allows us to reach as many orphanages and communities as possible and ensure that the aid is distributed effectively,”** he added.

The ECOWAS Volunteers Programme has been actively contributing to the development and well-being of Sierra Leone through various initiatives. This latest effort underscores their commitment to supporting the most vulnerable populations in the country.

Rado Swaray Continues to Prioritize Workers’ Welfare

As he continues to seek the welfare of workers nationwide, the Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, and his team visited Super Holdings Limited and Kadco, in Freetown today.

The visits align with the Minister’s drive to familiarize himself with employers and gather first-hand information about workers’ welfare and their general working conditions.

Super Holdings Limited produces plastic products such as water bottles, water sachets, trash bags, and essential plastic kitchen utensils.

Kadco is known for its local herbal drinks like bitter Kola products and other beverages.

During the visits, the Minister and his team engaged workers who freely voiced their constraints relating to their efficiency at work.

Both managements assured that they would address every issue/concern raised by their workers and the Ministry’s team, with appropriate guidance from the office of the Commissioner of Labour and Employment.

Since assuming office as the Labour Minister in 2023, Mr. Swaray has made it a priority to visit private business establishments and companies nationwide to personally assess the state of affairs with workers.

“While the president has committed to creating 500,000 jobs within the next 5 years, we want to ensure that the jobs that Sierra Leoneans are already doing are safe and dignified,” he usually says.

He hopes to keep moving around until the Ministry’s presence is felt in every employment facility in the country.
