In a time where healthcare systems across the globe are striving for innovation and resilience, Sierra Leonean surgeon and healthcare leader Dr. Mark I. Kapuwa is emerging as a transformative force, blending clinical expertise with strategic leadership to reshape medical practice and hospital management.

Dr. Kapuwa’s journey from Freetown to internationally recognized medical institutions reflects a story of determination, adaptability, and professional excellence. His career, spanning multiple continents, underscores the growing role of globally trained professionals in strengthening healthcare systems in developing nations.

His academic path began at Methodist Boys’ High School, where he completed the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations in 2001. He later enrolled at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, before expanding his educational pursuits internationally.

In Russia, Dr. Kapuwa demonstrated remarkable versatility by earning a diploma in Russian language at Voronezh State Technological University and a qualification in computer programming and networking from Kursk State Technical University. His academic journey reached a defining milestone when he obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, a globally recognized institution known for training international professionals.

Dr. Kapuwa’s surgical career has been shaped by extensive international exposure. He completed his residency in general surgery at the Central Clinical Hospital of the Russian Academy of Sciences, gaining hands-on experience in complex surgical procedures.

Further specialization followed through urology training at Mansoura University and advanced mid-career training at Apollo Hospitals in New Delhi, India.

These global experiences have enabled him to develop a broad and sophisticated surgical skill set, encompassing general and urological procedures, pediatric abnormalities, and reconstructive surgeries such as cleft repair.

Upon returning to Sierra Leone, Dr. Kapuwa brought this expertise to the national healthcare system, contributing significantly to improving surgical standards.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Kapuwa has distinguished himself as a leader and administrator. His early leadership roles included serving as President of the Association of African Students in Russia and leading Sierra Leonean student communities across Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

These experiences laid a strong foundation for his later contributions to healthcare leadership.

Since 2017, he has held several key positions within Sierra Leone’s health sector, including Medical Superintendent, Specialist-in-Charge, and Head of Regional and National Hospitals. In these roles, he has been instrumental in driving institutional reforms, improving service delivery, and strengthening hospital management systems.

In April 2023, Dr. Kapuwa assumed the role of Hospital Care Manager at Connaught Teaching Hospital, one of the country’s leading referral hospitals. His leadership at the facility reflects a commitment to integrating clinical excellence with efficient healthcare administration.

Recognizing the importance of management expertise in modern healthcare, Dr. Kapuwa pursued further education in the United States. He earned a dual-specialty MBA in healthcare and hospital administration from the University of Washington in 2023. The program equipped him with essential skills in strategic planning, financial management, and organizational leadership.

He has also undertaken specialized training in leadership and management in health, project management in global health, and economic evaluation in healthcare further strengthening his ability to navigate the complexities of contemporary medical systems.

In addition, he holds a diploma in public health, reflecting his commitment to both clinical care and population health.

Dr. Kapuwa’s diverse skill set extends beyond medicine and administration.

He is proficient in multiple languages, including English, Krio, and Russian, with working knowledge of French and Spanish. His background in computer programming and networking further enhances his ability to engage with emerging healthcare technologies and digital systems.

His contributions to the medical field have not gone unnoticed.

Dr. Kapuwa has received numerous awards and recognitions, including honors for leadership and professional excellence. He has also made significant contributions to medical research, with publications addressing critical issues such as atypical appendicitis, laparoscopic surgery complications, and modern approaches to inguinal hernia repair.

Notably, his research has focused on healthcare challenges within Africa, including studies on pediatric burn injuries, neonatal care, surgical outcomes, and cleft conditions.

These works have contributed to a growing body of knowledge aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the continent.

In addition to his medical and administrative roles, Dr. Kapuwa is also a freelance journalist and a rights activist, reflecting his broader commitment to advocacy and public engagement.

Colleagues describe him as a visionary leader whose work embodies the integration of global knowledge with local impact. His ability to combine surgical precision with strategic thinking positions him as a key figure in the ongoing transformation of Sierra Leone’s healthcare system.
