Since assuming the role of Executive Chairman at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Abu Bakarr Massaquoi has wasted no time in implementing significant reforms, marking a new era of progress for the agency.

In just a short span of a few months, Dr. Massaquoi has spearheaded a series of reforms aimed at improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the EPA. These reforms encompass a wide range of initiatives, including enhanced stakeholder consultation processes and increased donor support, signalling a commitment to transparency and collaboration.

Within his first month in office, Dr. Massaquoi led the drafting of a comprehensive roadmap outlining the agency’s strategic priorities for the year 2024 which provides a clear direction for the EPA but also identifies the most effective pathways for implementing key activities as part of the agency’s ambitious seven-year transformation strategy.

Under Dr. Massaquoi’s visionary leadership, the EPA is poised to establish the National Environmental Enforcement Coordination Committee (NEECOM), a crucial initiative aimed at strengthening the agency’s capacity to combat environmental crimes nationwide. From illegal logging and mining, including sand mining, to poaching and wildlife trafficking, NEECOM will serve as a valuable tool in safeguarding the environment for future generations.

Furthermore, Dr. Massaquoi has been instrumental in forging international collaborations with prestigious organizations such as the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and the Conservation International Foundation. These partnerships not only enhance the EPA’s global standing but also facilitate knowledge exchange and capacity building initiatives, positioning the agency as a leader in environmental stewardship on the world stage.
