The Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development, Rev. Dr. Jonathan Titus-Williams on Wednesday, 14th August, 2024, urged ministry staff to prioritize professionalism and a results-oriented approach during a three-day capacity-building training program. The training, which focuses on ECOWAS protocols and policies, regional integration, and public service ethics, aims to equip staff with the necessary skills to enhance their effectiveness in the civil service.
The program, titled “Capacity Building on Understanding ECOWAS Protocols and Policies, Regional Integration, ECOWAS Intervention in Sierra Leone, and the Civil Service Code,” also covers the role of the Development Secretary, the structure and operations of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Development (MoPED), and essential writing skills for civil servants.
Rev. Dr. Williams highlighted the importance of the training, stating, “Capacity building is a key component of H.E. President Bio’s Big Five Game Changers.” He emphasized that the training’s overall objective is to develop a more efficient, professional, and results-driven workforce at the ECOWAS National Office and within the various departments and units of MoPED.
Additionally, the training seeks to raise awareness among staff about the objectives, goals, and vision of ECOWAS as a regional organization, particularly its outlook for 2050.
Dr. Williams stressed that strengthening civil servants’ knowledge is crucial for improving public service administration and fostering personal development within the workplace.
The Deputy Secretary of Planning and Economic Development, Mr. Usman Conteh, who also served as Chairman during the training, reinforced the importance of capacity building, describing it as the “architect and bedrock” of public administrative protocol.
The Development Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Peter N. Sam-Kpakra , expressed his appreciation for the initiative, noting that the training is not only relevant for MoPED staff but also for all civil servants.
Participants welcomed the opportunity, viewing the training as a vital step towards enhancing their professional ethics and skills. They expressed their commitment to fully engage in the three-day program to maximize its benefits.
This capacity-building initiative represents a significant effort to bolster the effectiveness of the civil service in Sierra Leone, ensuring that staff are well-prepared to contribute to the nation’s development in alignment with ECOWAS objectives
The training brought together seasoned senior Civil Servants that would be providing support to the process.
