Creating safe spaces for Hajabis in educational institions

The hijab is a headscarf worn by some Muslim women that cover the hair, neck and the entire body, leaving the face visible.

The practice of wearing the hijab is rooted in Islamic teachings that emphasize modesty in behavior and dress. Women wearing the hijab sees it as a personal and spiritual choice that reflects commitment to the Islamic faith, identity, privacy and a symbol of modesty.

It is worn in accordance with the Islamic teachings that promotes modesty.

The practice is said to have orientation from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who requires his wives to be veiled in public as a way of protection.

The Holy Quran which is the holy book of Islam has many references supporting the idea of the hijab requiring that all “believing women should lower their gaze and guide their modesty”.

Creating a safe space for Muslim hijab girls in educational institutions is important for several reasons.

Creating a safe space for Muslim hijabi promote Religious freedom and respect.

Respecting the right of Muslim women in educational institutions will enable mutual understanding between administrators and Muslim students in educational institutions that creates a lasting relationship for both parties, with principles of religious background.

Creating a safe space promotes inclusivity and diversity

Educational institutions should reflect the diversity of the society they serve, by allowing Muslim students to dress as their religious faith demands and fostering an inclusive environment where every Muslim woman feels accepted, appreciated and valued despite their religious beliefs and cultural backgrounds.

Creating a safe space for Muslim women encourage healthy dialogue and understanding among students and administrators. It reduces stereotype and promoting a more harmonious and cohesive students body.

Also, creating a safe space support personal identity. For many Muslim women the hijab is a significant aspect of their identity therefore giving them the freedom to put on the hijab without harassment will support their personal and psychological well-being.

Its creates an environment where all students can focus on their education without fear.

Lastly, it serves as a way of empowering female students

Allowing students to wear hijab can empower enable them to make choices regarding their own bodies, how they want to be addressed in society and how they wish to present themselves.

This however is crucial for their development and confidence

To create a safer space for Muslim women wearing hijab in educational institutions the following consideration should be taken to action:

Education and Training: Provides training for staffs and students on religious sensitivity and the importance of diversity and inclusion.

Support System: Establish support systems such as counseling services and peer support groups for students who face discrimination or harassment from educational institutions administrators.

Open dialogue: creating a space for open dialogue and discussions about religious diversity to promote understanding and acceptance.

Educational institutions play a significant role in shaping societal attitudes, by supporting the right to respect religious beliefs, tolerance, acceptance and diversity in the broader community.

If educational institutions successfully implement these strategies in creating a safer space and welcoming environment for all students in educational institutions.
