Brima Baluwa Mohamed Koroma has pledged to implement strong reforms within Sierra Leone’s oil and gas sector, stressing that consumers must always receive value for their money.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA) headquarters in Freetown, Koroma addressed the media shortly after being confirmed by Parliament as the first Director General of the NPRA.
He highlighted the critical need for transparency, accountability, and effective regulation to ensure fair pricing and high-quality service delivery throughout the petroleum sector. Our mandate is to protect the public interest. Every Leone spent by consumers must translate into real value, Koroma emphasized.
The newly appointed Director General also revealed plans to combat fuel adulteration, reduce smuggling, and enhance compliance across the entire downstream petroleum value chain.
The creation of the NPRA represents a significant milestone in Sierra Leone’s efforts to improve petroleum governance and boost investor confidence. Koroma, who brings extensive experience in regulatory affairs, committed to leading a results-driven team focused on reform and improved service delivery.
We will not tolerate compromises on standards. The era of inefficiency and exploitation is over, he declared. Our vision is to transform Sierra Leone into a regional hub for the petroleum industry, while remaining mindful of the evolving impacts of climate change.
He called on all operators, importers, and dealers to prioritize the interests of the nation. Let us work together in the best interest of the country he urged.
He also took the opportunity to thank President Julius Maada Bio for entrusting him with the responsibility of serving as the first Director General of the NPRA. I humbly accept this appointment, Koroma remarked. My team and I will work under new strategies focused on industry development, attracting both local and international investors.”
