As the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) marks the first 100 days of Major General Amara Idara Bangura’s tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, it is a moment of profound pride and optimism for our nation. Appointed on 19 December 2024 by His Excellency President Brig Gen (Rtd) Dr. Julius Maada Bio, Major General Bangura has swiftly translated his vision into action, laying a robust foundation for a modernized, cohesive, and resilient defence force. His strategic foresight, unwavering commitment to national security, and dedication to the welfare of service members have set a transformative precedent, earning him respect across ranks and beyond borders.
A New Era of Strategic Policy and Interoperability
One of the CDS’s landmark achievements is the formulation and implementation of Sierra Leone’s Maiden National Defence & Strategy Policy. This ground-breaking framework aligns defence priorities with national security imperatives, emphasizing interoperability, technological integration, and resilience. The policy addresses multifaceted threats—from transnational crimes and piracy to climate-driven disasters—by fostering a proactive, unified response across the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Under Major General Bangura’s leadership, the RSLAF is no longer merely reactive but positioned to anticipate and neutralize emerging challenges through collaboration and innovation.
Tri-Service Unity: Strength in Collaboration
The CDS’s introduction of the Tri-Service Approach has revolutionized joint operations. By breaking down silos between the Army, Navy, and Air Force, he has cultivated a culture of unity and shared purpose. This synergy enhances operational effectiveness, enabling rapid responses to threats in Sierra Leone’s waters, airspace, and land borders. For the Navy, this collaboration has translated into bolstered maritime patrols, with increased fuel allocations ensuring sustained presence at sea to combat illegal fishing, smuggling, and piracy. The CDS’s directive to “prioritize interoperability” has transformed how we secure our nation—proving that together, we are stronger.
Investing in Infrastructure and Welfare
Recognizing that a motivated force is the backbone of national security, Major General Bangura has prioritized the welfare of service members. His comprehensive welfare package includes the landmark Veteran Bill Policy, expanded support for marriages and funerals, and improved living conditions through the refurbishment of service headquarters. These initiatives have uplifted morale and reaffirmed the value of every soldier, sailor, and airman.
Simultaneously, infrastructure development has taken centre stage. Funds have been secured to modernize naval facilities, including jetty construction in Bonthe Town and Sulima, while plans for a state-of-the-art naval base in the York Peninsula signal a leap towards operational excellence. The CDS’s vision extends beyond bricks and mortar—it is about creating an environment where our forces can thrive.
Building Self-Reliance: The Defence Enterprise Service
In a bold move toward self-sufficiency, Major General Bangura has launched the Defence Enterprise Service. This initiative includes partnerships with local industries, such as collaboration with Sierra Leonean engineers to construct sea-going vessels for the Navy—a project poised to evolve into a full-fledged naval defence industry. Additionally, plans for a domestic laboratory to manufacture critical medical agents will reduce dependency on foreign supplies and enhance operational readiness. These efforts epitomize the CDS’s belief in home-grown solutions to secure our nation’s future.
Strengthening Regional and Global Partnerships
The CDS’s diplomatic acumen has reinvigorated Sierra Leone’s role in regional security. Through strategic engagements with ECOWAS, the African Union, and international allies, he has fostered intelligence-sharing and joint initiatives to combat piracy, terrorism, and climate-related threats. These partnerships not only amplify our defence capabilities but also position Sierra Leone as a trusted leader in regional stability.
Lessons for the Future
Major Gen Bangura’s first 100 days offer invaluable lessons:
- Unity is Power: Cross-service collaboration maximizes impact.
- Welfare Drives Excellence: Caring for personnel strengthens institutional loyalty.
- Innovation Fuels Progress: Investing in local industries builds resilience.
A Call to Collective Action
As we celebrate this milestone, the path ahead demands continued unity and resolve. Major General Bangura’s leadership has redefined what is possible for the RSLAF, but the journey toward a safer, more prosperous Sierra Leone requires sustained effort from all stakeholders. Let us rally behind his vision, support our brave servicemen and women, and remain steadfast in safeguarding our nation’s peace and sovereignty.
To the CDS, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your first 100 days have ignited hope, inspired excellence, and set a course for lasting transformation. May your tenure continue to be guided by wisdom, courage, and an unyielding commitment to Sierra Leone.
Here’s to 100 days of progress—and to a future where the RSLAF stands as a beacon of security, innovation, and pride.
