WRMC Serving Regional Integration

On June 28, 2024, Dr. Sao-Kpato Hannah Isatta Max-Kyne, the esteemed Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation of Sierra Leone, demonstrated exceptional leadership and vision at the 5th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Ministerial Monitoring Committee on Water Resources. The session, themed “WRMC Serving Regional Integration,” underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing water resource challenges across West Africa.

Approval of the Draft Work Programme of the Technical Committee

One of the key highlights of the session was the approval of the Draft Work Programme of the Technical Committee. This comprehensive document detailed the Committee’s report, including highlights on previous resolutions, progress on implementation, achievements, and recommendations. Several significant resolutions were approved by the ECOWAS Ministerial Committee on Water Resources, marking a milestone in the region’s journey towards sustainable water management.

Advocating for Regional Water Basin Monitoring

Speaking at the session, Dr. Max-Kyne stated that Sierra Leone welcomes the proposed initiative of the Technical Committee for ECOWAS to create a Water Basin Institution to monitor the water basins in the Mano River Union (MRU), provided it does not conflict with the existing mandates of the MRU. The Technical Committee addressed her concerns, ensuring that the new institution would complement the MRU’s efforts rather than conflict with them.

Addressing Concerns about the Makona River

Dr. Max-Kyne also raised concerns regarding the Makona River, highlighting issues brought up by a member state that threaten peace, security, social cohesiveness, and prosperity. These concerns were noted by the Ministerial Committee on Water Resources of ECOWAS, emphasizing the need for collaborative solutions to transboundary water challenges that affect regional stability.
