The Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) announced on 19th March, 2025, a pivotal partnership with the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) aimed at bolstering community-centered policing efforts across the nation.

A delegation from CCSL, led by Programme Manager Rev. Moses Khanu, visited the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, at the Police Headquarters on George Street. During their meeting, Rev. Khanu outlined CCSL’s extensive work in all sixteen districts of Sierra Leone, which focuses on advocacy, gender issues, and psychosocial counselling related to female genital mutilation, drug abuse, and sexual and gender-based violence.

Rev. Khanu acknowledged the challenges CCSL faces regarding referral processes despite employing professionals in these fields. He praised the SLP’s transition from a force-oriented to a service-oriented model, highlighting its alignment with CCSL’s vision for community engagement. “For over six years, we have engaged in community outreach programmes, and we are pleased to strengthen our ties with the Sierra Leone Police for more effective service delivery,” he remarked.

In response, IGP Sellu welcomed the new partnership and expressed appreciation for CCSL’s initiative. He reiterated SLP’s determination to build trust through community-focused policing and underscored the significance of collaboration with organisations like CCSL. “This partnership aligns perfectly with our vision as we transition from a force to a service model. We look forward to collaborating, particularly in school sensitisation and community engagement, which are vital for fostering trust with the public,” stated IGP Sellu.

To facilitate smooth collaboration, IGP Sellu appointed the Director of Gender and Community Relations to spearhead joint initiatives with CCSL, especially for outreach programmes in schools. He also encouraged CCSL to collaborate closely with the Transnational Organized Crime Unit on drug-related cases and counselling. Furthermore, he proposed that CCSL develop training programme for police personnel, recognising that the officers themselves could benefit from counselling services.

Concluding his remarks, IGP Sellu reaffirmed SLP’s steadfast commitment to the partnership, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts for the betterment of the country.
