The Sierra Leone Commercial Motor Bike Riders Union has announced that all commercial motorbike riders across the country will be required to wear helmets while riding, effective Monday, 9 March 2026.

The directive follows a meeting between the Union’s National Secretariat and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), aimed at strengthening road safety and protecting riders while carrying out their daily transport activities.

According to the agreement reached during the meeting, the enforcement will initially apply only to riders. Passengers are not yet required to wear helmets under the current directive.

Officials of the Union said the decision forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents and promote responsible riding among commercial motorbike operators nationwide.

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Union called on all regional, district, and park executives to ensure that members strictly comply with the new safety measure.

The Union further urged riders across the country to cooperate fully with the authorities, noting that wearing helmets is an important step toward safeguarding the lives of riders who face daily risks on the roads.

Leaders of the Union also reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police and other stakeholders to improve road safety and maintain order within the commercial motorbike transport sector.

Commercial motorbike transport remains one of the most widely used means of movement across many parts of the country, making safety measures such as helmet use increasingly important in reducing injuries and fatalities from road accidents.
