AU and AUSSOM Delegates Engage IG Fayia Sellu to Boost FPU-6 Pre-Deployment Readiness

By Emma Black

In a significant diplomatic and operational milestone, a delegation from the African Union (AU) and the Africa Union support Mobilisation mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) visited Sierra Leone’s inspector general of police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, at his Kingtom office earlier today, Monday, June 16, 2025. This courtesy call underscores the collaborative efforts to prepare the Sierra Leone Formed Police Unit (FPU-6) for its upcoming peacekeeping mission.

The delegation was led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) John Fayiah Tumbay, Head of the Peacekeeping Department, and included Mr. Jones Sarfo from the AU and Mr. Thomas Aggrey-Fynn from AUSSOM. Their visit coincides with a week-long intensive pre-deployment training programme at the Sierra Leone Peacekeeping and Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA), designed to hone FPU-6 officers’ tactical skills through practical, scenario-based exercises.

During the meeting, IGP Fayia Sellu warmly welcomed the delegates, noting that the FPU has already completed comprehensive training, we are confident in our officers’ readiness and value the additional tactical guidance from our partners to address potential challenges, he said, emphasizing the need for realistic preparation, he reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s steadfast support for global peace initiatives and extended best wishes for the training’s success.

The visit concluded with a group photograph, symbolizing this partnership. As the training progresses, this collaboration highlights Sierra Leone’s growing role in international peacekeeping, a development to watch in the coming days.
