Ambassador Dr. Alhaji Sarjoh Bah - Africa’s Strategic Voice in Beijing

In the dynamic arena of global diplomacy, few figures command the gravitas, intellect, and pan-African commitment of Ambassador Dr. Alhaji Sarjoh Bah, the newly appointed Permanent Representative of the African Union (AU) to the People’s Republic of China.

A proud son of Sierra Leone, Ambassador Bah’s journey is a testament to academic excellence and dedicated public service.

He holds a Ph.D. in Political Studies from Queen’s University (Canada), a Master of Public Administration from the University of Cape Town, and a Bachelor of Arts from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone.

His scholarly work has significantly shaped discourse on regional integration, peacebuilding, and the architecture of African peace and security.

A Diplomatic Appointment of Strategic Significance

Ambassador Bah’s posting to Beijing comes at a critical juncture in Africa–China relations.

With China now Africa’s largest trading partner and a key development ally, the AU’s diplomatic presence in Beijing is far more than symbolic—it is strategic. His mandate is to deepen and coordinate Africa’s engagement with China, ensuring that partnerships align with Agenda 2063, the AU’s blueprint for continental transformation.

In his early engagements, Ambassador Bah has begun shaping the AU’s response to the ten Partnership Actions announced by President Xi Jinping during the 2024 FOCAC Summit.

These include cooperation in industrial development, digital economy, green growth, health, trade, infrastructure, and human capital development—areas where Africa seeks not just investment, but equitable and sustainable collaboration.

From Peacebuilding to Continental Diplomacy

Ambassador Bah brings over two decades of experience within the African Union Commission. He has served in pivotal roles, including:

– Director of Conflict Management

– Head of the Crisis Management and Post-Conflict Reconstruction Division

– Chief Advisor on Peace, Security, and Governance at the AU Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations

His leadership has been instrumental in shaping the AU’s mediation frameworks, post-conflict recovery strategies, and multilateral partnerships. Whether navigating the complexities of peace operations or advocating for African-led solutions, Ambassador Bah has consistently championed institutional resilience, inclusive governance, and African agency.

A Thought Leader and Policy Architect

Beyond his diplomatic roles, Ambassador Bah is a prolific author and respected policy thinker.

His publications have influenced global discourse on peace operations, transitional justice, and regional security mechanisms.

A trusted voice in multilateral forums—from New York to Addis Ababa—his intellectual contributions continue to guide the AU’s strategic direction.

A Vision for Africa–China Relations

Ambassador Bah’s vision for Africa–China relations is grounded in mutual respect, strategic alignment, and shared prosperity.

He emphasizes that Africa’s engagement with China must be coordinated, transparent, and driven by African priorities.

As the AU’s lead diplomat in Beijing, he also plays a key role in coordinating the African Group of Ambassadors, ensuring that Africa speaks with one voice on the global stage.

A Continental Strategist for a New Era

In recognition of his distinguished service, Ambassador Bah was conferred the rank of Ambassador by His Excellency Brigadier (Retired) Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

This honour reflects not only his national contributions but also his enduring impact on continental diplomacy.

As he assumes his role in Beijing, Ambassador Bah embodies the AU’s aspiration for principled, Pan-African leadership in global affairs.

His appointment signals a renewed commitment to African-led diplomacy and marks a new chapter in the continent’s engagement with one of its most important partners.
