In a decisive move to protect state property and enhance community security, the Regional Commander of Freetown East, assistant inspector General (AIG) Brima Kanneh, has officially launched the construction of a perimeter fence around the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) land at the Owen Street police post, located along the Hill Side Bye-Pass Road in the eastern part of Freetown.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on-site, marked the beginning of a long-anticipated project aimed at preventing illegal encroachment and ensuring the land is preserved for official policing purposes, speaking after an inspection and briefing session with the local commanding officer, AIG Kanneh commended officers and personnel for their vigilance and steadfast commitment to safeguarding police assets.
This land belongs to the Sierra Leone police, and it will be developed to serve the needs of both the police and the community, AIG Kanneh emphasized. i urge everyone to respect the vision and work together to see it through, the regional commander reaffirmed that the property would be used strictly for its intended purposes, stressing that the initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Sierra Leone police to reclaim and secure all government lands under their mandate.
He appealed to community members, local authorities, and other stakeholders to support the project, noting that protecting police property contributes directly to improved service delivery and community safety, the brief but significant event concluded with a symbolic turning of the soil by AIG Kanneh, officially signaling the start of construction.
The project represents a milestone in the SLP’s ongoing efforts to assert institutional control over its assets and prevent unauthorized occupation an issue that has long affected several police properties across the country, as construction progresses, residents of the Freetown East region have expressed optimism that the secured land will pave the way for future development, strengthen policing capacity, and foster greater public trust in the Sierra Leone Police.
