In a country like Sierra Leone where poverty is entrenched and systems are not in place for especially disadvantaged people like disables who go through daily struggles. Across the world, 1.3 billion people live with disabilities but the situation in Sierra Leone makes for a sober reflection. At this year’s world disability day in Bo they gathered to remind government, international development partners to heed their call.

Very little has been done to address their plight and are still being affected by social, economic and other factors especially in Sierra Leone. In a society that shows the tendency to be indifferent to their plight, government needs to make it incumbent on citizens by enacting laws that cater to their needs and welfare. These should be done to create an equal society.

At this year’s world disability day and in full glare of the media they made it known that they still face ” discrimination in employment, receive low wages, are likely to be in poverty, face stigma, discrimination and exclusion from education especially quality one.”

Lamin Mansaray, a man who has tasked himself with making sure disables get the chance to move freely around to attend to their daily needs has helped to provide them with clutches, wheel chairs and motorized tricycles. “I am grateful to partners like Mobility World Wide who have made my work easier by giving me the financial and material resources to help disables In Sierra Leone move from one place to another to access health services and other essential facilities.” Lamin Mansaray realizes that in periods of emergency persons with disabilities are more likely to face death or injury. So, a clarion call is being made for government to make and enact inclusive laws so that disables can live and realize their full potentials as ” disability is not inability.”
