Government has through the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on Friday, 12th July, 2024, issued out a press release imposing a temporal ban on timber logging and transporting.
According to the press release, imposing the temporal ban on timber logging and transporting is a decisive action to address the issue of rampant deforestation in the country and respond to the severe environmental impacts caused by extensive logging activities.
“The ban which was to be officially issued out on 1st June, 2024, is regarded as a seasonal measure to combat the environmental challenges facing Sierra Leone. However, in order to give adequate notification to those involved in the timber business, the ministry has resolved that the said suspension takes effect from 12th July to 31st October, 2024,” excerpts of the press release states.
