Forty-Two Nigerian military students visited the Parliament of Sierra Leone on Tuesday, 21st May, 2024, at Tower Hill in Freetown.
Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense, military officers, and other personalities in the security sector witnessed the courtesy visit.
The visiting military officers are students of Course 46 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff of Nigeria. Headed by Brigadier General A.M. Grema, they visited the Sierra Leone Parliament to discuss ways to strengthen security relationship between Sierra Leone and Nigeria.
In his presentation on the theme “Leveraging Good Governance for Operational Efficiency of Security Forces: The Role of Parliament in Perspective,” the chairman of the defense committee, Honourable Rogers, spoke on a variety of issues, including the general role of Parliament in security issues and the role of Parliament in relation to good governance, citing sections of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone which make the security of the country the primary responsibility of the government, adding that Parliament plays a pivotal role in security reforms through legislating laws for the safety and security of the state.
“The approval of treaties and other legislations relating to security are all efforts of Parliament in ensuring the safety of the state,” he said.
Honourable Rogers added that 25 percent salary increment for security personnel have been made through the efforts of Parliament, particularly the Parliamentary Committee on Defense.
Other participants made similar PowerPoint presentations on issues related to the security and stability of Sierra Leone.
