COMEDY AND SIERRA LEONE MUSIC

By Sheku Putka Kamara

Ages ago, many people were of the opinion that the good old days had the best of songs and acts, but maybe those opinions are now taking a different dimension.

With respect to all of the legends of the game, past and present, I strongly believe that we now have ‘new schools’ that have matched standards. Whilst we may not have reached the heights of enviable global recognition largely because of our numbers, we must continue to accelerate speed and boost efforts and see that we achieve that which is meant to be realized.

Comedy for example has taken a different trajectory in Sierra Leone; and with young champs like Richie Obama, Robinho, Orga Worwor, Faculty, among other standing comedians, the country has witnessed how stand-up comedy could bring about the much-needed societal humour. Leave Yemata who is believed to be the laughing matter and Desmond Benya, one of the comedy godfathers, you will notice that there has been steady progress. Again, it is worthy to note that it is one of the most peaceful sectors and yes, almost all of them are very supportive to one another and such drive is needed in the quest to attain steady progress.

For music, maybe we cannot say the same because no matter what, while some progress has been made, there are a few more issues. Not too long ago, for instance, Kao Denero had issues with Drizilik, Nashito Kulala and Incredible JJ. Also, Morris and Fyn Face had some brawl sometime back. However, the good news is that the two popular hip-hop stars, representing Black Leo and Red Flag Movement (RFM), Kao Denero and King Boss LAJ, respectively, have mended fences. While those controversies are sometimes needed, the importance of a peaceful coexistence could also not be overstated.

Like Comedy, Music is also making waves, but maybe we have to preach more and allow love to lead. See what happened to Emmerson’s Stick to the Plan? In just under a week, it reached one million views and now, it is chasing two million. Those are the sorts of progressive we’d love to see.

Like I would always note, whilst we may not have it all at present, we should however be able and be willing to take the necessary steps and cautions to realize the much-needed progress. Until then, let’s keep it going!
