impass between usl

By Sheku Putka Kamara

Even if you are not a prophet, I need not remind us all that the current impasse between what I’d refer to as sections and or fractions of the University of Sierra Leone and the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education is not the best of standard practices. For whatever reason, MTHE has decided to dissolve the University Court. USL and numerous right groups and persons say MTHE do not have the power to execute such functions. As it stands, it almost appears as if we do not know where we are and that is surely not a good sign.

From matriculation to graduation, it is almost as if everything is on some standstill and you wonder where we are headed. Members of the USL Court believe that MTHE acted in an unlawful manner, but the ministry believes otherwise. In all of this, it is sickening to notice that there are certain USL staff members that take sides with MTHE.

Earlier, I had called on President Maada Bio to step in as Visitor of the Uni and as the number one man of the land (at present). Come to think of it; is the Minister of Technical and Higher Education not appointed by the President? Can she sack another Presidential Appointee in the Chancellor of USL? I do not think that we need to be lawyers to get to answer some of these rhetorical questions. This is why it is really prudent for HE to step in and put an end to all of this.

The other day, Abdul Fatorma’s (Esq.) rights group, CHARDI, issued some ultimatum to USL, but with the thinking that we may have published this magazine bearing this article before the ultimatum reaches, let’s get to wait and see what’d happen.

As it stands, graduation and matriculation ceremonies of USL will likely not take place because of the absence of the University Court which MTHE is said to have dissolved. So, where do we stand? Hoping that this matter is addressed in no time because what is currently happening is not a way to go.
