Asma James, a sport executive and journalist in Sierra Leone, said in the next five years, female football will lead the sport industry around the world as they are working to create the environment for female football to thrive. She was speaking on Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, at the government weekly press briefing.

The Chief Executive of Rise Radio thanked the First Lady of Sierra Leone Fatima Maada Bio for facilitating a huge financial support that the female premier league board received from her office in organizing the first female elite league in the country, noting that the league was successful and it was an eye opener for women’s football in the country.

She also reacted to recent violence perpetrated on female referees in the country, saying that it should be totally condemned by all means. She intimated that she is working behind the scene in engaging with stakeholders within the football industry in handling matters relating to violence against female referees.

“Attack on female referees is an issue that is very sensitive and I am observing that is the reason I have not made any public announcement because of personal reason,” she said, adding it is really sad as it is not only an attack on female referees but even on male referees. According to her, the country has been struggling to get referees that will officiate female football league.

“The attack did not start now, and this time around, actions must be taken to stop the violence,” the sport executive emphasized.
