Members of Sierra Leone’s Cabinet on Wednesday paid a surprise tribute to President Dr. Julius Maada Bio in recognition of his successful tenure as Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, describing his leadership as a landmark achievement that has enhanced the country’s diplomatic standing across West Africa and beyond.
The special ceremony took place during a Cabinet meeting at State House, where what had been scheduled as an ordinary session turned into a moment of celebration and appreciation for the President’s contributions to regional integration, peace and diplomacy during his one-year chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which spanned from June 2025 to July 2026.
Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, together with Cabinet Ministers, presented President Bio with a signed citation of appreciation and a commemorative plaque in recognition of what they described as his exemplary leadership, commitment to regional cooperation and dedication to advancing the objectives of ECOWAS.
The commemorative plaque reflected the ones President Bio had earlier presented to fellow West African Heads of State following Sierra Leone’s successful hosting of the 2026 ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit. The symbolic gesture underscored the country’s growing reputation as a respected centre for regional diplomacy and international engagement.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Chief Minister commended President Bio for what he described as a defining period in Sierra Leone’s diplomatic history. He praised the President’s vision, resilience and determination in steering the affairs of the regional bloc during a period marked by significant political, economic and security challenges within West Africa.
According to the Chief Minister, President Bio’s leadership strengthened regional cooperation while promoting peace, stability and dialogue among member states. He further noted that Sierra Leone’s successful hosting of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit demonstrated the country’s capacity to organise major international events to globally accepted standards.
He highlighted that the summit brought together 11 Heads of State, special guests, more than 500 delegates and over 2,000 visitors from across the region and beyond. He described the gathering as one of the largest diplomatic events ever hosted by Sierra Leone and praised the peaceful atmosphere, effective coordination and high level of professionalism displayed throughout the summit.
The Chief Minister said the successful organisation of the regional meeting reflected the President’s commitment to strengthening Sierra Leone’s international image and expanding its influence within regional and global institutions. He expressed confidence that President Bio’s achievements would remain an enduring legacy for future generations of Sierra Leoneans.
Other Cabinet members joined in applauding the President’s leadership, noting that his tenure as ECOWAS Chairman elevated Sierra Leone’s voice on regional matters and demonstrated the country’s readiness to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding, democratic governance and economic integration within West Africa.
Responding to the surprise recognition, President Bio admitted that he had not anticipated the ceremony and expressed appreciation to the Vice President, Cabinet Ministers and the people of Sierra Leone for the honour.
Drawing on his military background, the President humorously remarked that surprises were usually tactics employed against an opponent rather than something a soldier expected to experience personally, a comment that drew laughter from those present.
President Bio described the honour as both humbling and encouraging, but stressed that the achievements recorded during his ECOWAS Chairmanship were not the work of one individual. Instead, he said they reflected the collective efforts of government institutions, development partners and the people of Sierra Leone.
He thanked the Vice President, Cabinet Ministers, ministries, departments and agencies, members of the security sector, development partners and ordinary citizens for their dedication and support in ensuring the success of the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit and the country’s regional engagements.
The President reaffirmed his belief that Sierra Leoneans can achieve remarkable progress when they work together with a shared sense of purpose and national unity. He said the successful hosting of the summit demonstrated the country’s resilience, professionalism and ability to deliver on major international assignments.
He further noted that Sierra Leone’s performance during the summit had strengthened international confidence in the country’s governance, hospitality and institutional capacity, while creating new opportunities for regional cooperation and diplomatic engagement.
The ceremony concluded with Cabinet members reaffirming their commitment to supporting President Bio’s vision for national development and strengthening Sierra Leone’s position on the regional and global stage. They pledged to continue working collectively to promote good governance, regional integration and sustainable development in line with the President’s agenda.
The tribute marked the end of President Bio’s ECOWAS Chairmanship, leaving behind what government officials described as a legacy of effective leadership, strengthened regional cooperation and renewed international recognition for Sierra Leone’s role in advancing peace, unity and development across West Africa.
