
The Minister of Sports, Madam Augusta James-Teima, on Saturday, 11 April 2026, witnessed the Sierra Leone Tennis Association National Championship Grand Final held at the Hill Station Tennis Court in Freetown.
Speaking after the event, the Minister expressed satisfaction and pride in attending the championship, noting that it was inspiring to witness such dedication, energy, and sportsmanship despite the long day. She emphasized that tennis is steadily growing in Sierra Leone and should be regarded as a serious sport alongside football.
Madam James-Teima highlighted the importance of diversifying sports development in the country, stressing that attention must also be given to disciplines that are performing well beyond football.
She commended the young players for their impressive display of skill, fitness, and determination, noting that their performances reflected consistent training and commitment. The Minister also extended appreciation to the Sierra Leone Tennis Association, its officials, coaches, referees, and sponsors—particularly Marampa Mines and M-Pites—for their continued support, acknowledging the vital role sponsorship plays in the growth of sports.
The Minister congratulated all participants, especially the winners and the defending champions, while also recognizing Salah for his strong performance and promising potential. She encouraged players to maintain unity, friendship, and collaboration, emphasizing that teamwork and peace are essential for sustained success.
In her closing remarks, Madam James-Teima reaffirmed the government’s support for tennis and expressed optimism that the sport will continue to grow and gain national recognition. She also urged experienced players, including Bassie, to mentor upcoming talents to help produce more champions in the future.
Meanwhile, the President of the Sierra Leone Tennis Association expressed gratitude to former Minister, Hon. Rado Yokie, and other dignitaries for honouring their invitation. He assured that next year’s National Tennis Championship will be even bigger and better.
At the end of the competition, Bassie Kargbo emerged as the 2026 National Male Champion, while Balu Kargbo clinched the Female title. Both winners received trophies, medals, and cash prizes.
The championship attracted key stakeholders, including representatives of the main sponsor, Marampa Mines, who were in full attendance.
The successful hosting of the event has been widely praised, with commendations extended to the Association’s leadership and organizing team for a job well done.
