In the tranquil coastal town of Bonthe, where the ocean breeze meets swaying palm trees, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education has commenced its annual retreat, bringing together key officials tasked with shaping national media engagement and civic education strategies.

Scheduled for February 2–4, 2026, the three-day retreat offers participants a rare opportunity to step away from the fast-paced environment of the capital and engage in focused reflection, collaboration, and forward planning. Set against Bonthe’s serene natural backdrop, the gathering provides an ideal space for thoughtful dialogue, creativity, and strategic alignment.

The retreat serves as a platform for ministry staff to assess past achievements, draw lessons from experience, and collectively chart new approaches to public communication and civic engagement. Through structured discussions and peer exchanges, participants are laying the foundation for innovative outreach strategies designed to deepen public understanding and participation in national development.

This year’s retreat carries added significance following President Dr. Julius Maada Bio’s declaration of 2026 as the “Year of Action” in his New Year address to the nation. In response, the Ministry reaffirmed its responsibility to lead government communication efforts with clarity, accuracy, timeliness, and effectiveness. Central to this mission is ensuring that vital information reaches citizens across the country from remote rural communities to bustling urban centers in a way that informs, engages, and inspires.

Ministry officials emphasized that the retreat goes beyond routine planning. It represents a renewed commitment to transparency, trust-building, and inclusive civic participation. By aligning the Ministry’s vision with the evolving needs of the nation, participants aim to strengthen the role of communication as a tool for empowerment and democratic engagement.

As discussions continue in the calm and reflective atmosphere of Bonthe, the Ministry is harnessing collective expertise to shape a dynamic communication agenda for the year ahead. The outcomes of the retreat are expected to guide impactful public messaging and civic education initiatives, supporting a more informed, engaged, and empowered citizenry across Sierra Leone.
