On the eve of the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP 2025), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has issued a powerful statement warning of an escalating global threat to contraceptive access and reproductive rights, just as global demand reaches record highs.
In its latest release, UNFPA emphasizes that contraceptives are essential and lifesaving, but that the systems supporting them from supply chains and funding streams to political commitment are faltering at a critical moment, this crisis, the agency warns, could leave millions of women and girls worldwide without access to the basic tools necessary for bodily autonomy and reproductive health.
Contraceptives remain essential and lifesaving, yet supply chains, funding streams, and political will are collapsing at the moment demand is surging among women and girls worldwide,” UNFPA stated. Millions are now at risk of losing access to the most basic tools for bodily autonomy and health.
The statement serves as a stark reminder of the widening inequality in global sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) particularly in low- and middle-income countries where funding cuts, economic instability, and political resistance are threatening decades of progress.

This latest warning follows a media advisory released earlier this week by ICFP organizers, highlighting why the 2025 conference in Bogotá, Colombia, is being described as the most urgent global convening on reproductive health in a decade.
The conference which officially opens on Monday, November 3, 2025 will bring together more than 3,500 delegates from across the world, including health ministers, researchers, journalists, youth advocates, and development partners, the discussions are expected to center on funding challenges, contraceptive security, gender equality, and the role of family planning in achieving universal health coverage.
Global health leaders say the meeting comes at a defining moment, as mounting geopolitical tensions and global inflation threaten international aid for family planning and reproductive health programs.
ICFP 2025 is not just another conference it’s a global call to action, said Matt Matassa, Global Media Lead for ICFP 2025, If you cover health, gender, human rights, or geopolitics, this will be the defining story of the week.
The conference will also feature the release of new data on contraceptive access, youth engagement, and the economic benefits of investing in reproductive health. Organizers say they hope the event will lead to renewed global commitments and practical solutions to safeguard reproductive rights for future generations.
As the world prepares for ICFP 2025, UNFPA’s message is clear: the fight for contraceptive access and reproductive freedom is at a crossroads, demanding stronger global solidarity, financing, and policy action to ensure no woman or girl is left behind.
