The Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs (MTCA), on October 8-9, 2025, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP), conducted a comprehensive two-day Nature-Based Digital Ecotourism Training in Kambia District as part of its ongoing Year of Ecotourism Campaign. This initiative focused on building local expertise and promoting Kambia’s unique ecotourism attractions through a blend of educational workshops and on-site visits.
The program was officially opened by Hilton Leigh, Assistant Director of Tourism, Travel and Exchange, who delivered remarks on behalf of the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Farida Tunis. Paramount Chief Bai Farama Tass Bubu warmly welcomed the MTCA delegation, underscoring the transformative potential of tourism for fostering economic growth and community development in the region.
Idrissa Bangura, Deputy Director of Tourism, emphasized that the training aligns with the National Tourism Policy and Ecotourism Action Plan, prioritizing digital marketing strategies, environmental sustainability, and active community involvement. Sessions covered critical topics such as content creation for tourism promotion, biodiversity preservation, and strengthening the tourism value chain. Participants demonstrated their dedication by signing the Ecotourism Commitment Banner, pledging to support sustainable tourism initiatives.
The training was complemented by visits to notable local attractions, including the Kambia Pumping Station Resort on the banks of River Kolenten, a sustainable riverside destination known for recreational activities and cultural ceremonies. The delegation also explored Fun City Ecopark, a community-managed recreational hub offering family-oriented experiences, and Moriya Hotel, which is undergoing renovations to enhance its capacity as a premier tourism facility.
Through this initiative, the MTCA reaffirmed its dedication to empowering local communities, fostering sustainable tourism practices, and establishing Kambia as an emerging destination that harmoniously blends cultural heritage, natural beauty, and entrepreneurial opportunities.
