The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) successfully concluded a two-day in-service training for traffic police officers on Friday, August 15, 2025, at Kingtom, Freetown, aimed at enhancing professionalism and public trust in law enforcement.
In his opening remarks, Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu underscored the critical need for comprehensive, inclusive capacity building within the SLP. He emphasized that training opportunities should extend to officers of all ranks, rather than being limited to a select few who travel abroad for professional development, by leveraging local resources, we can deliver cost-effective training that reaches more officers and strengthens our force, IGP Sellu stated.
The training, designed specifically for investigators and point duty officers, focused on improving skills in traffic management and crime scene handling. IGP Sellu highlighted the pivotal role these officers play in shaping the SLP’s public image. Investigators and traffic officers are the face of the SLP. Enhancing their professionalism through targeted training will foster greater public confidence in our work, he said.
IGP Sellu urged participants to maintain fairness in case handling, uphold high standards in traffic management, and diligently apply their skills, particularly at crime scenes. He cautioned against prioritizing personal gain over service, warning that such practices undermine the SLP’s core values, our mission is to safeguard lives and property, that must remain our focus, he stressed.
Commissioner Abdul Moijueh, Director of Traffic Management and Road Safety, delivered the welcome address and outlined the training’s objectives. He noted that the program was designed to equip traffic officers with the tools to operate with greater professionalism, ultimately enhancing the SLP’s operational effectiveness and public perception.
The two-day training initiative reflects the SLP’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of its traffic police force and promoting best practices in traffic management and road safety. By investing in local training programs, the SLP aims to build a more skilled, accountable, and community-focused police force.
