SLP Guarantees Peaceful Student Union Elections at Eastern Technical University

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Kenema Division, has been praised for ensuring a peaceful and orderly Student Union Presidential Election at the Eastern Technical University (ETU-SL), held on the university’s Kenema campus.

Sunday, 17 August 2025, with heightened security measures in place, officers maintained a strong presence around polling stations, safeguarding electoral officials and ballot boxes, while deterring any potential disruptions. Their vigilance allowed the highly anticipated election to proceed without incident.

Students turned out in impressive numbers to cast their votes, demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to the democratic process, the election concluded smoothly, with Mariame Baimba Keita emerging victorious as the new Student Union President. Jubilant celebrations followed her declaration, marking a memorable day on campus.

Speaking after the polls, Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Francis Moses Tower, Regional Commander-East, commended the student body for their discipline and cooperation throughout the process, he reaffirmed the Sierra Leone Police’s commitment to upholding peace and security during democratic events.

The conduct of this election shows that with discipline, respect, and proper security measures, democracy can thrive at all levels, AIG Tower stated, he further assured the public that the police remain steadfast in supporting transparent and credible elections across the region.
