In a bold and proactive move to strengthen public safety and reduce crime in Kenema, chief superintendent Ambulai Alphonso Fambuleh, 1 July 2025, the local unit commander (LUC) of the Kenema police division popularly known as correct Man has led a comprehensive inspection of all three major police checkpoints under his command.
Accompanied by his operations officer, inspector Mohammed Corneh, and other senior personnel, the LUC conducted the exercise to reinforce operational effectiveness, review standard procedures, and assess the readiness of officers stationed at these critical security points.
Although such inspections are standard, this particular visit carried heightened significance as it marked the beginning of intensified efforts to combat rising security risks often associated with the rainy season, chief Superintendent Fambuleh highlighted that the checkpoints have already played a pivotal role in numerous arrests, ranging from the seizure of illegal drugs to the recovery of stolen motorcycles and other contraband items.
He urged officers to remain alert and professional in the execution of their duties, reminding them that criminal activities tend to increase during this time of year, with the rains come new challenges, that’s why we must double our efforts and be vigilant, criminals will exploit any weakness, the LUC cautioned.
During a series of briefings at the checkpoints, the LUC revisited the standard operating procedures (SOPs) guiding checkpoint operations, he offered tactical advice, based on his extensive experience, on how officers can better detect and intercept individuals attempting to smuggle illegal goods or evade arrest.
He also delivered a strong message from the inspector general of police, Mr. William Fayia Sellu, urging all personnel to exhibit renewed commitment, discipline, and consistency in their service, the inspector general has called on all of us to raise the bar in our crime prevention strategies, Fambuleh noted, we must be proactive, not reactive.
As part of the renewed push for effective enforcement, chief superintendent Fambuleh directed all checkpoint commanders to, intensify stop-and-search operations, particularly at night, five special attentions to vehicles operating without license plates, conduct regular arrests where necessary, uphold the professional image and integrity of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP).
During the inspection, checkpoint commanders shared a number of logistical and operational challenges affecting their work, the LUC acknowledged these concerns and proposed practical solutions to ensure smooth and efficient operations moving forward.
This renewed focus on checkpoint performance forms part of a broader strategy to position the Kenema division as a model of effective policing and community safety, with firm leadership and increased accountability, the Kenema police division is taking decisive steps toward its vision of a crime-free environment for all.
