E.U. lauds A.U. for historic continental free trade pact, pledges support

Madam Fatmata Kamara, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, delivered a heartfelt keynote address during the World Metrology Day 2025 celebrations, the event was hosted by the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau in partnership with the Ministry of Trade and Industry at the Sierra Leone Standards Bureau office in East End, Freetown, bringing together key stakeholders from the trade sector.

May 20, 2025 representing minister Ibrahim Alpha Sesay, Madam Kamara expressed her deep honor and gratitude in marking this important occasion under the global theme Measurements for All Times; For All People. She emphasized how this theme highlights the vital role of metrology the science of measurement in driving sustainable progress, ensuring fairness, and promoting inclusivity across all facets of society.

Madam Kamara underscored that accurate and reliable measurements form the foundation of trust in both domestic and international markets, they are essential for fair trade practices by guaranteeing that goods are measured precisely, prices are fair, and consumers receive genuine value for their purchases.

She stressed, the theme, Measurements for All Times, For All People, reinforces that no one should be left behind whether a smallholder farmer, a local artisan, or an exporter. Measurements must empower everyone, regardless of their background or location.

In her remarks, Madam Kamara reiterated the government’s firm commitment to advancing His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s Big five game changers, outlined in the Medium-Term National Development Plan (2024–2030). She highlighted how strengthening Sierra Leone’s metrology infrastructure aligns seamlessly with key national priorities including Human Capital development, infrastructure development, agricultural transformation, Private Sector growth, and good governance.

Madam Kamara further emphasized that robust metrology systems contribute to broader sustainable development goals, such as enhancing environmental sustainability, improving health and safety standards, and fostering innovation, these efforts collectively pave the way for a brighter and more equitable future for Sierra Leone, while aligning with global aspirations for equity and prosperity.

Closing her address, the Deputy Minister called on all attendees and citizens alike to reaffirm their personal commitments to upholding the principles of accuracy, fairness, and inclusivity in all trade practices. She stressed the importance of working together to build a system where measurements truly serve everyone ensuring Sierra Leone’s prosperity is built on the pillars of trust, innovation, and opportunity.

Madam Kamara concluded by assuring the audience that the government will continue to prioritize metrology as a critical engine of economic development and pledged tireless efforts to create an environment where every citizen benefits from the power of precise measurements, securing lasting progress for current and future generations.
