Sierra Leone’s supreme court, presided over by a panel of five judges, ruled on May 9, 2025, that the motor drivers and general transport workers union must hold its national executive elections by June 30, 2025, the court also directed the union to regularize its membership to ensure fair representation.
The decision resolves a legal dispute between the union’s president, Alpha Amadu Bah, and respondent Abu Saidu, the conflict began when Bah filed a Notice of Motion on November 20, 2024, seeking court intervention to block alleged external interference in the union’s electoral process, this led to a supreme court injunction on March 20, 2025, halting the elections until a final ruling.
After reviewing submissions from both parties’ lawyers, the court set the June 30 deadline, mandating compliance with legal and procedural standards, the judges stressed the importance of addressing voter eligibility concerns by regularizing memberships to guarantee a transparent and inclusive election.
The motor drivers and general transport workers union, a vital organization representing transport workers nationwide, now faces the task of preparing for the elections while ensuring all members are properly registered.
