A contingent of 38 officers from the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has returned home after successfully completing a peacekeeping mission in Somalia, their deployment formed part of an international initiative to support peace and stability in the East African nation.

On Tuesday 7 May 2025, Sierra Leone police welcome and debriefing ceremony was held at the senior police officers’ mess in Kingtom, where the Inspector general of police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, applauded the officers for their dedication, professionalism, and discipline throughout the mission, he noted that their contribution not only elevated the SLP’s international standing but also reflected positively on Sierra Leone’s commitment to global peacekeeping efforts.

This mission brings honour to our country and credibility to our police service, Mr. Sellu said, we are grateful to God for your safe return, your actions have made us proud, the IGP informed the returning officers of ongoing reforms within the SLP, particularly the organization’s shift from a Force to a Service a transformation aimed at improving public trust, accountability, and community engagement. He encouraged the officers to remain humble, committed, and ready for future assignments, stressing the need for integrity and professionalism as they resume domestic duties.

Acknowledging the personal sacrifices made during their deployment, Mr. Sellu announced a two-week leave for the returning officers to help them rest, reintegrate, and address any personal matters, I know some of you had plans before you left, he said, this break gives you the opportunity to catch up and prepare for what lies ahead.

Touching on personnel development, the IGP revealed that a survey is currently being conducted to assess structural needs at both lower and middle management levels within the SLP, he encouraged officers to remain flexible and open to redeployments, reminding them of the police ethos, once a police officer, always a police officer.

Mr. Sellu concluded by expressing his heartfelt appreciation for the courage and professionalism demonstrated by the officers, I am truly happy to see you all alive, safe, and well, he said.

Following the ceremony, the officers were officially handed over to the assistant commissioner of police and head of peacekeeping, Mr. John Fayiah Tumbay, for administrative processing ahead of their reintegration into the national police force.
