The Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) has started its lower -level elections across the country. And this has come at a time that the mandate of the current party executive has expired. Although a clause in the party’s constitution gives them the leverage the go on for another six months until full cycle elections are done and completed and this was agreed on in the last NEC meeting in Freetown. In light of that, this medium caught up with the current chairman of SLPP, Bo district, Mohamed E. K. Alie who is also former resident minister of the southern region. He has been very upbeat about the chances of the party going into 2028 elections.
b fd”First of all, I am proud of my record as the longest-serving resident minister of the south in the history of Sierra Leone and calling on party members who have gone into this lower-level election to be law-abiding, gracious in defeat and magnanimous in victory.” That first he attempted to be mayor of Bo but it did not work, next he wanted to be a member of parliament but could not succeed and in all of these he did not give up but remained “loyal to the party.”
That the Sierra Leone People’s party “is known for concrete development activities and not just mere promises.” He calls on the party membership to focus on consensus-building so that there will not be much acrimony or fighting. This will also help preserve the unity of the party and keep the membership intact.
The first date of the lower-level elections which was on the 8th. February has come and gone come and gone without much acrimony in Bo and on the whole, it was largely peaceful except that surprise candidates came and won. And some losing candidates are bitter which was what Chairman Alie cautioned against party members not accepting defeat and wanting to stay away from the party and pitching tent with the opposition or even just staying neutral which drains the party of votes. We already have started seeing signs of that These lower-level elections are stepping stones to electing national officers who are going to vote in the flagbearer for the presidential elections come 2028.
Chatting further with Chairman Alie, he gave this medium the impression that come 2028, the SLPP is going to win the elections again, saying they have delivered for the people of Sierra Leone even in the face of global economic challenges and threats of overthrowing them.
