Ministry of Internal Affairs in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sierra Leone convened a critical planning meeting on 7th February, 2025, to discuss the imminent return of Sierra Leonean nationals who have been deported from the United States. This meeting was organized in response to growing rumors and intelligence indicating that multiple nations, including Sierra Leone, would be accepting the deportation of their citizens residing illegally in the U.S.

Minister of Internal Affairs, Rtd AIG Morie Lengor Esq, addressed the gathering, stating that the meeting was necessary due to the spread of rumors on social media and the confirmation that other countries are expected to cooperate in the deportation process. The Minister further clarified that the Immigration Department has been informed about the return of Sierra Leonean migrants, many of whom have undergone interviews as part of the deportation process. He stressed that the meeting aimed to devise a coordinated approach to handle the deportees’ arrival in an organized and professional manner.

Key stakeholders present at the meeting, including representatives from various government ministries, discussed several important topics, particularly migration management and improving coordination among the involved agencies. These discussions were aimed at ensuring that the arrival of the deportees is handled smoothly, with adequate support systems in place.

Madam Pauline Macharia, Officer in Charge of IOM Sierra Leone, highlighted IOM’s position. While IOM is not directly involved in the deportation process, she reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to assisting the government in facilitating the return of migrants. IOM is prepared to provide reintegration support to the returnees, both at an individual level and within local communities, to help them rebuild their lives after returning to Sierra Leone. She also requested more detailed information regarding the deportees, such as their gender, age, and other personal details, to better tailor the reintegration programs.

Attendees included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Immigration Department, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, the Ministry of Social Welfare, and the Transnational Organized Crime Unit. These participants shared valuable insights and constructive feedback on the issues being addressed.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to hold further discussions to finalize preparations for receiving the deportees and ensuring that the necessary resources and programs are in place to support their smooth transition back into Sierra Leonean society.
