Child Trafficking

In a major milestone for child protection in Sierra Leone, recent reports indicate a notable drop in child trafficking rates across four key districts: Kenema, Bo, Koinadugu, and Western Area Rural. This progress reflects the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between local authorities, international organizations, and community stakeholders.

During a press briefing on December 4, 2024, the Ministry of Social Welfare disclosed that trafficking cases in these districts dropped by an average of 35% compared to the same period last year. Minister Mariatu Bah attributed the decline to “targeted measures that address the root causes of trafficking while enhancing child protection mechanisms.”

The government’s strengthened anti-trafficking policies, coupled with increased police patrols and monitoring at key transit points, have been instrumental in disrupting trafficking networks. In addition, public awareness campaigns have educated communities on the risks of trafficking and how to identify and report suspicious activities.

Collaborations with international partners, such as UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), have also provided resources for victim rehabilitation and reintegration, further deterring the exploitation of children.

Community leaders in Bo and Kenema have praised the interventions, highlighting how grassroots efforts have played a pivotal role in reducing child vulnerability. “Our community watch groups and school sensitization programs have empowered parents and children to resist false promises from traffickers,” noted Chief Sahr Jalloh of Koinadugu District.

Despite the progress, experts warn that child trafficking remains a significant concern in Sierra Leone, particularly in remote areas where poverty and lack of education persist. Organizations have called for sustained funding and expanded programs to ensure continued progress.

The declining rates of child trafficking offer hope for Sierra Leone’s vulnerable children. By maintaining robust partnerships, increasing surveillance, and addressing the socio-economic challenges that fuel trafficking, the nation is making strides toward protecting its most valuable asset, its children.
