Sierra Leone’s Vice President, Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, has addressed the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, calling on Beijing to support the need for reform in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and enhance Africa’s representation.

The VP started by conveying warm wishes from His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and the people of Sierra Leone to the President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government, and congratulating them for celebrating their shared history and aspirations for a more equitable global governance structure.

He also urged the Chinese government to give His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio, the necessary support to actualize Sierra Leone’s dream as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.

The historic event, which was held at the Chinese Embassy in Freetown, gathered dignitaries, ministers, and citizens to join the Chinese community in the country to reflect on the deep rooted friendship between the two countries.

He recalled Sierra Leone’s landmark decision to back China’s bid for a seat in the Council in 1974, illustrating the long-standing solidarity between the two nations. “As a country and a continent, we are looking up to China for support in this endeavor.”

The Vice President underscored the importance of African nations securing their rightful place in international decision-making processes, asserting that the continent deserved an enhanced representation within the Council’s permanent categories.

He expressed gratitude for China’s continued partnership and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to the friendship that had flourished over the decades.
